I noticed your frequency correction is set to zero. When you were looking for the 10m beacon you never tuned once, expecting it to be centered in the filter and despite the beacon seeming to be present in the waterfall. Try tuning, figure out the offset and set the frequency correction accordingly, e.g. with WWV as they don't seem to ship with that calibrated, mine is set to -1, it was not far out but possibly that's enough of an offset to not hear a beacon in a narrow filter. The Russian original DSP1 was much further out frequency wise. Same goes for the time setting, it is one of those real time clock crystals and I had to set -10.2s per day. Logic for CW is not what I would call standard, the setting needs to be SSB with the CW button setting the bandwidth. Odd but you get used to it. It will decode CW, sort of. RTTY too. FT8 even which is useful as quite often it seems that's all that is on the bands these days.
Wow!!!Some great radio. One of the great gen purpose comms' receiver. Thanks for sharing your video.
0.1 MHz = 100 kHz, not 100 Hz. But everything else in the video was great! 🙂
The Zenith has too much in one Shortwave Band.... not good 😮
I like the Sony Best 😮. ..the Zenith I want is the one that includes the VHF Band
I like the Phillips Best....
Back in the day. .I wanted these radios.....I was wondering if I still can get one of these 😮
@@rkmklz7562 just keep checking ebay. Thats where I got mine
Amazing 40+ radio still beats down a morder one like this Tecsun, lo my 2001, definitely need this Sony !!
You didn't have the cw signal tuned correctly for the CW patch that was set on the 5000. Learn how to use radios before you demo them! You don't even know what a notch filter is. You don't know what the audio peak filter is. And you were wayyy out of tune on the CW pitch. You have to center the CW note for where the pitch is centered. That's the equivalent of the BFO control on the WJ. Randomly spinning dials and punching buttons isn't the way to compare receivers. You could have dialed both rigs to be exactly matched. Not impressed at all. More money than sense.
@@Kibwunga thanks Karen
@@dieselten01 Haha, no credibility. In case you might want to read the manual. Not for nothing but here's a tech tip. The "offset " moving from cw to other modes is directly equal to the CW pitch. CW is just the turning on and off of a transmitter. There is no tone. The tone is inserted by the BFO. Otherwise known as a beat frequency oscillator. In order to hear the tone, the receiver has to shift to the CW pitch or BFO setting. If your CW pitch is set to 600, then you are going to get the best filter performance listening to the cw note at 600. Otherwise, you will be off the center frequency of the filter passband. Instead of being prideful, try to learn something. It will transform your ability to actually use a receiver to its highest potential. APF is Audio peak filter. It's a tunable filter in the audio chain to isolate the CW signal. NTCH is a notch filter and allows you to select a frequency to be notches or attenuated. Usually used to get rid of heterodynes. Using features willy nilly can actually degrade the signal.
@@dieselten01 I think the DX5000 has an auto zero beat for the CW note, but use your ears. You will hear a noticeable peak when you are in the center of the filter passband. If you get that wrong and go narrow, the signal will go away. The 5000 can do better than the WJ. Just gotta know how things work.
still, the Sony is better,,,audio better on Tecsun
Great video! I couldn't find any info like the manual of your TR860 but, not sure if is going to help, I used to have the TR807 and I discovered that it was produced in Japan as Koyo KTR 1770 when apparently Grundig had shortages on their own production. Will be worth to look at the same radio with other aliases.
@@georgejaroslavsky5148 good idea, thank you!
Grundig Satellit Transistor 6001: next on the line? They were great receivers back in the late 60s, early 70s...
@@jmsjms296 unfortunately I don’t have one to test
Thanks for the demonstration I have a National Panasonic DR -2800 that I bought in 1983 with a blue display. I still listen to it on medium wave (AM) as it drifts horribly on Short-wave since it was new. I also have a Sony 6800W and both use 6 D cells and have excellent battery life. Both are DX machines on MW but the Sony shines on shortwave reception. However the Sony was around $550 new where a I paid about $182 new at the ship’s store in Diego Garcia…military discount. 73!
too bad the tecsun being modern does NOT have air band.
Thank for the video. You forgot to press the LW switch from band selector. You still on SW, trying to tune on LW.
This really not that big a difference. And frankly, I don’t understand the point. It’s not something you would listen to. Not for very long. Meanwhile, there’s so much more to receiver than just AM. Lots of sideband and data and CW as well. A lot of the HF operations for airlines is on upper side bend. I do agree that the DSP should’ve been available for a.m. But direct sampling technology has caught up to superhet. The only thing in the way was the quality of the A/D chips
Try turning off the display of the 705 for less noise and interferences
Indeed, some of the noise picked up by the Malahit sounded very typical like the 705's display noise. The Belka's little aluminum shell was found to be extremely RF-tight in comparison (by hams running not being able to hear their own transmissions when nothing is attached to the Belka's antenna jack).
I can see the same difference between my Panasonic DR26 (EU version of the 2600) and my Grundig Satellite 400 International...in favor to the Grundig. Greetings from Leeds (UK)

Is a hifi receiver/amplifier with the particularity to have long wave, medium wave, and shortwave (3-30 MHz divided in 3 segments) plus full FM 88-108...The sound is incredible. 73dx from Leeds from an Argentinian DXer

Yesterday, you posted the "Shoutout Teaser" video of these two beauties, and I knew I was going to enjoy it. Great comparison as always, and thanks for posting this.
@@geraldo1971 my pleasure!
Hello there! My Transoceanic D7000Y (by the way, you are correct, your radio is a D7000Y too), is one of the best DX and SWL radios that I've ever had, despite having suffered a 6 feet fall (a very unfortunate accident). The upper part of its case is broken, but everything works perfectly. Best regards and 73's!
@@maxal62 I am glad to hear you are having a great time with your Zenith. The one thing I don’t like that I mentioned in the video is how crowded the 49 meter band is. There can be 5 separate signals in literally 1/16” linear space. Very hard to tune. Thank you for your comments!
Thanks for this comparison video of two old DX warriors…in hot humid buggy Dallas Texas. As compared to my QTH in Hot (Humid for a change) Tucson , Arizona an irritating bugs paradise in our monsoon season. 73! Have a great day!

Great to see two of the top portable performers of their day competing with each other with that sweet solid state DX.! Nice to see analog dials that I can read with out my glasses! I believe you have to pushin or pull out the BFO button in to control the RF gain on your Sony. 73! Have a great day!
@@Kw1161 I will check that RF out. I really needed it last night!
I found a copy of the manual online. It confirmed my thoughts, there is no attenuation or RF gain adjustment in AM mode. Only in side band with the BFO on. Too bad.

Your sure do have good taste in radio receiver; in every video you have beauties. Can't wait to see that shootout. Thanks!
@@geraldo1971 Robert, what do you think would be more interesting. To do this comparison outside on the whip antennas? Or inside on the Wellbrook?
Both
@@dieselten01 Yes, just like "martinryan5069" wrote: "Both", hi!hi!. But if I had to choose, I would say inside with the Wellbrook. But I'm not an expert like you, and you know I'm going to like either one of the antenna you select for the shootout.
Just Im planning to buy predecessor - Satellit 600. I have 400 too and I had 2000. Nice old staff from the time when quality was most important. P.s. today Grundig is a Turkey brand in Europe. They sell shitty staff with this brand. The owner of Grundig name is Arcelic Turkey (also Beko, Whirpool etc...)
@@jano3681 agreed. Grundig sold the brand and the new products are much lower quality. I am actually receiving a Grundig 860 today. If it works good I will do a video. Thanks for your comments

Even after 1 year I still enjoy the video. And the TS-890S does have IF shift capabilities. Just called something different.. I wanted you to know I finally have Given Up!! I have been outside your home every trash pickup day for the last year, and still no TS-890S radio in the trash... BTW, I think it is time to place the Malahit DSP2 SDR Radio up against the IC-R9500 receiver.... Come On Lets Do It!!!!! 🙂 Robert.....
@@myradiovideos can’t let that POS DSP2 desecrate the hallowed ground of the 9500. Besides, my fingers and brain would get too tired trying to figure out which button to push on the dsp2 just so that there is no bleed through like an artery that was hit by a bullet!
This is not a fair comparison. The Belka is optimize for hi-Z antennas (very high Z in fact, like 5-10k Ohms) whereas the GA-800 outputs at 50 Ohms.
@@charlesfeinstein7035 then why does the Belka work even better on the Wellbrook?
@@dieselten01 I wish I knew. I would be curious to know whether the Wellbrook is also located in roughly the same indoor location as the whip and the GA-800. What I do know is that I use a GA-800 as a travel antenna. It performs poorly with my Belka, but quite decently with my Tecsun PL-680 (which has a low-Z external antenna input). The GA-800 isn't particularly high gain, but its main advantage is that the small loop is quite directional and can be used to null out noise. In high RFI environments like an urban area hotel room this can be quite an advantage.
The Philips / Magnavox D2999 has a place among the classic portables. For those who have never used one, the D2999 is a very interesting unit -- it has huge audio performance, with a switchable top/front speaker and a huge telescopic whip. This is an interesting comparison. But the SW8 is simply in a different class. Do not expect decent SSB performance from the D2999 since it wasn't really made for it. And switching from automatic to manual gain improves SSB. It has basic NARROW/WIDE filtering. For those interested in getting a D2999, ask questions before buying, including whether the backlight bulbs on the meter and main display are working, because replacing the bulbs is a bit of a technical challenge. Occasionally, D2999s, whether under the Philips or Magnavox label, appear NIB and certain Ebay sellers try to get high prices for those. Just be careful.
I purchased a 525 from Universal Radio in the early 90s. I had them install the really narrow CW filter (I think it's 500hz) and it works really well, as you might imagine.
@@billpenna I would bet that it sounds just like the Kenwood’s 500hz filter. These 2 radios sound very similar through the same speaker.
Thank you for the review. Based on what I heard I think you are very near to Fort Worth, TX. Just realized you said you are near Dallas, so I guess no big surprise.
As others mentioned and you surmised, PBT only in SSB on Kenwood. Audio on 515 -- don't underestimate that receiver. The 515 is IMHO among the top 10 best receivers of all time. Also, you should start IDing your stations: 6185 Radio Educacion Mexico and Rsdio Nacional Brazil...
Good video. Yes, even Janhke repairs sometimes don't completely resolve the key bounce unfortunately. The 525 was my first venture into JRC consumer receivers in 1986. Today, you see many appearing on the used market with cosmetic and other issues. The challenge with the 525 is that the displays start failing so you have to examine photos carefully for signs of that. Performance-wise, the 525 was nice, but criticized for "wooly audio" which also was the main criticism of the 515. I think the audio issue on JRC consumer rigs was overblown -- the 535/D I have here -- thanks Nick -- has quite nice audio in my opinion.
Now always run my radios on 12VDC, run much cooler, and just got my D2999 going again after watching your video, I had a R5000 but it overheated and never worked again, R5000 runs hot as hell.. happy I got my D2999 going been years since I used that radio, matt
Malahit dsp2 switching off the screen makes also a huge noise difference
Mine was noisy, fully of birdies and the S-meter on a dummy load was reading S7 with internal noise. Airband was crap and too many controls to optimise the gain. I sent it back it has too many bugs.

Great video and enjoy all of your series. I've owned all of these and they all sound great! That being said if I were shopping today would have to go with the Kenwood due to the fact that it can still be serviced. None available for JRC or Drake. As for the best on the table.....I would say the Drake, as it's only weakness is the tuning encoder, as they are prone to fail with age.....but are readily available in eBay ( cheap ). Loved the JRC 515 and was my favorite old school receiver. and bought a mint used one in Dallas many years ago for $100 at Texas Towers.....they knew nothing about it.
